What phone do you use?

My personal SIM card floats between an iPhone and an Android phone or two frequently. I use whatever I feel like using whenever I feel like it. I have a problem. (I also hate eSIMs. I’ve had nothing but problems with them, and they suck!)

Do you prefer iOS or Android?

I only prefer iOS for Snapchat, as the app just is NOT good on Google Pixel (despite having access to special features on those devices.) It is just so unbelievably slow and unstable compared to the iOS app. So, I stay logged in on an iPhone about 80% of the time.

If I had to be stuck on one for the rest of my life, I’d probably pick Android, though. I’ve been with it longer and most of my app purchases are there as a result. I also have an Android tablet I really love too, so, that probably has something to do with it.

Similarly, do you prefer macOS or Windows?

Between the two? macOS. After Microsoft released Windows 8/8.1, the OS has been in this weird free fall state that I’m not really a fan of. 10 was fine (I guess), but wasn’t good, and 11 is just awful. I only use Windows if a game has anti-cheat or something, and I don’t keep any personal information or secrets on that machine.

But if it’s not between the two, and it’s just whatever one I’d rather use forever, it’s Linux. I grew up on Ubuntu, so I have been a Linux user since age 4 (no, I’m not joking on my age there.) You can thank my grandfather Ted for that!

Did you really grow up with dial up internet?

I’m probably one of a few born-in-2002 kids to have experienced dial up internet, yes. My mom doesn’t seem to remember anything about it, but I mostly do! My grandfather set up GNOME-PPP and with it, I did a lot of things I shouldn’t have been doing at such a young age. Like setting up a Facebook account (at SIX YEARS OLD) among other things.

…Just please don’t ask how I managed to do this for as long as I did without anyone catching me, considering how slow dial up is.

How did you learn to code?

My grandfather taught me some basic HTML/CSS around 15 years ago (2009), when he was the webmaster at one of the local churches. I “stole” two books of his on HTML4 and CSS shortly after that and started making things. I even once made a website that literally just showed you a flamingo in the dead center of the screen! And yes, I still have the files for that.

For PHP and some other things—I’m entirely self taught! I wouldn’t call myself an expert, but I definitely know my way around. My point is, you don’t need to be an expert to start. StackOverflow is a great resource for solving whatever problems you’ll run into. Visual Studio Code, which didn’t exist back in 2009, has plugins that’ll help you build things faster.

As it is today, I just open Nova and start writing. As much as it pains me to admit, my entire website and blog are built with PHP now. I don’t really love PHP—but it works, so I can’t really complain.
